LADIES CANASTA

The ladies canasta group meets every Friday at 12:30 in the  Stoneybrook Rec Center. The only exception is that during the week of a Friday Pot Luck, we switch our day and play on Wednesday. It is a very friendly game and we encourage residents new to Stoneybrook  either full time or snow birds to join us. We play from 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM. Some ladies go to the Clubhouse for an early lunch at 11 and then join us at the  rec center.

We have members with various levels of expertise, from beginners to long time players.
On any given Friday we can have between 10 to 24 players. We “pull” numbers and learn at which table we will be playing, so at any table we can have experienced players with novices.

We always have a good time and encourage newcomers. Please email Rosalie Celio @
RAC1RJC1@AOL.com and let me know if you would like to join us.

History

Canasta originated in Uruguay, was refined and expanded in Argentina, and reached the United States in 1949, where it soon became the biggest fad in the history of card games.

"Canasta" is the Spanish word for "basket", and presumably was used in reference to the card tray that is commonly used to hold the stock and discard piles. In it's earliest versions it was known as "Uruguayan Basket", and the game is still sometimes referred to as "Basket Rummy".
